Vision 2020 is a global initiative aiming to eliminate avoidable blindness worldwide by 2020.
The issue
As part of the scheme, Moorfields Eye Hospital is looking at ways of making the expertise of UK-based doctors available to eye-heath clinicians in the developing world. With sponsorship from Cable and Wireless, Moorfields commissioned Jamkit to develop the web-based part of the project, a groundbreaking collaboration between its own staff and four African hospitals.
The solution
Jamkit designed and developed a prototype website that allows the scheme's participants to work together quickly and efficiently. Based on a secure internet connection, it provides easy-to-use tools for posting digital pictures and case histories, plus communication channels for discussions and referrals.
The result
The site will allow Moorfields to assess whether the internet offers a cost-effective means of providing remote diagnosis and condition management. If successful, it will significantly reduce the expense of consultations and allow Moorfields to extend the service to other hospitals.
